How to make an Inky Layered Christmas Wreath Card.

Sometimes when I’m making cards, I get the urge to get inky.

Some cards just call for it.  This card was one of those.

I summoned my inner “Tim Holtz” and inked my little heart out.  (It was fun!)

How to make an Inky Layered Christmas Wreath Card.

Directions:

  • Optional:  For easier assembly, I used the Xyron Creative Station* to add adhesive to the back of the cardstock before die-cutting.  (As the paper goes through the Xyron Creative Station*, it adds a complete layer of adhesive to the back.)
  • Die-cut the pieces for the wreath, as shown above, using the Wreath Die Set and green cardstock.
  • Die-cut the pieces for the bow using plaid scrapbook paper.
  • Using the Ink Blending Tool and Peeled Paint Distress Inkpad, generously ink all over the front of each die-cut piece.
  • Use the blending tool and Gathered Twigs and ink the edges only of the die-cut pieces.

How to make an Inky Layered Christmas Wreath Card.

  • Starting with larger die-cut wreath pieces, apply them to the wreath base.  Continue with the smaller wreath pieces.
  • Die-cut a cream banner using the banner die from the Snowflake Kisses stamp and die set. Stamp “Season’s Greeting” onto the banner using the Black Onyx Versafine Inkpad*. Put small foam dots on each side of the banner and place it centered on the wreath. 
  • Create the bow by gluing the two outside edge pieces to the center of the back of the bow.  Wrap and glue the small rectangle piece around the center of the bow.  Glue bow to ribbon end piece.
  • Die-cut four small red wreath pieces to use as flowers for the wreath. Add a small Red Nail Head Sticker to the inside of each flower.

How to make an Inky Layered Christmas Wreath Card.

  • Cut layers to add onto a gold square card. My card measures 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″.
  • To give the layers a worn look, ink the edges of each layer using Tim Holtz Gathered Twigs Distress Inkpad.
  • Place Gold Foiled Photo Corners* onto the edge of the layers and adhere them to the gold card.  
  • Put foam dots onto the back of the wreath and adhere the wreath to the center of the card.

I thought I’d make one last card that isn’t traditionally Christmas.

I wanted to make a Winter card that would work for a Winter Birthday

or Valentine’s Day. (but could also work for a Christmas card)

Directions:

  • Line up the “Snow Couple Die” over the stamped image.  Place a small piece of tape over the edge of the die to keep it in place.
  • Die-cut the Snow Couple out.
  • Use the Tombow Markers* to watercolor and color the stamped image.

  • For the frame: Cut a 5″ x 6″ piece of “Christmas Lights” paper from the Christmas Doodles Paper Pad. 
  • Place the paper into the Xyron Creative Station®* design side up. Crank the handle to move it through the machine. As it moves through, it adds a complete layer of adhesive to the back of the paper.
  • Die-cut the paper using dies from the Nested Rectangle Die Set. Adhere the frame onto a piece of “snowflake paper” from the Doodles Pad.

  • For the Card Front:  Cut a small strip of striped paper from the Christmas Doodles Paper Pad, run it through the Xyron Creative Station®* to add adhesive to the back. Die-cut the word “LOVE” using the Alphabet Dies.
  • Add thin 3D foam squares* on the back of the snowman couple and adhere inside the frame. Adhere the word LOVE over the snowman couple.
  • Adhere the frame onto a turquoise cardstock layer and a white cardstock base.
  • Finished Card Measures 5″ x 6 1/4″.

Cookies for Santa Card

One of my favorite Holiday Traditions is making Frosted Sugar Cookies.

I use the same recipe year after year.

It’s a simple recipe, written on a piece of notebook paper in my mom’s handwriting.

She wrote out the recipe and gave it to me the first Christmas after I married.

It’s stained, and the edges are tattered.  (I keep it in a protective sleeve now.)

I think of her every time I make them.  (sugar cookie recipe at the end of the post)

The “Cookies for Santa” card is just about as easy to make as the cookies themself.  

And you don’t have to wait for it to cool before enjoying it.

Directions:

  • It’s important to use white pigment ink* and white embossing powder* to get the whitest white cookie outline.
  • Stamp the cookie outline with white pigment ink onto kraft cardstock.
  • Pour a small amount of white embossing powder over the stamped image, shake off excess powder.  (If you pour over a piece of scratch paper you can easily repour the excess powder back into the jar.)
  • Use an embossing heat tool* to melt the powder until shiny.

  • Align the matching die with the stamped image and die-cut using the Mini Maker Die-Cut Machine.
  • The raised embossed edges make it easy to watercolor.  Use a waterbrush* along with a combination of markers and inks to watercolor the stamped images.
  • I used paper and labels from the Christmas Doodles Paper Pad for the front of the card.
  • This Christmas Card called for something a little shiny, so I added a piece of red foiled paper as a layer.
  • Adhere the frosted cookies onto the front of the card using thin foam squares.
  • Tie a red bow to finish off the card.

The Snowman Cookie Tag would look great on a wrapped plate of fresh Christmas cookies.

The base was made using a die from the Nested Arch Die Set.

Mom's Sugar Cookie Recipe

Here’s Mom’s Recipe.  (Enjoy!)

  • 1- 1/2 c. powdered sugar
  • 1 c. butter or margarine
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 2- 1/2 c. all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  1. Cream sugar & butter, add egg & flavoring, mix thoroughly.
  2. Sift dry ingredients together and stir in.  (I dump)
  3. Refrigerate 2 to 3 hours.
  4. Heat oven to 375°.
  5. Divide dough in half & roll out on lightly floured pastry sheet.
  6. Roll thin, but thick enough to pick up the design with the cookie cutters.
  7. Dip cookie cutter into flour before each cutting.  Cut as many cookies from each rolling as possible.  The least amount of working with the dough gives the best cookie.
  8. Place on lightly greased baking sheet.  Bake 7 to 8 min. or until delicately golden.
  • For the Glaze I dump around a cup of powdered sugar into a bowl.  Add a dash of vanilla.    Add milk one tablespoon at a time until you get the consistency you want.  (hint:  not too runny)

If you’re a fan of clean and simple cards, it doesn’t get much easier than this one.

Directions:  

  • Cut a 2 ½” x 5″ piece of cream cardstock.  Place the cardstock into the Xyron Create A Sticker Mini*.  Crank the handle of the Sticker Maker to run the paper through the machine.  As it runs through the machine it adds a complete layer of adhesive to the back of the paper.
  • Cut a gold foiled paper and run it through the Xyron Create A Sticker Mini*.

  • Place the “believe” die sandwiched between the Mini Maker cutting plates.  Turn the handle to run the die through the Mini Maker Die Cut Machine.
  • By running the paper through the Xyron Create A Sticker Mini* first, it creates a sticker out of the die-cut piece.
  • Cut the gold background and stars using the adhesive gold foiled paper, die, and the Mini Maker.

Elegant and Easy Holiday Card

  • Cut a 3 ¾” x 5″ cream cardstock layer.  Place the gold foiled believe background, believe words and gold foiled stars directly onto the cardstock layer.
  • Place several thin 3D foam squares* onto the back of the cardstock layer.
  • Adhere the layer onto the front of a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” cream card.
  • Tie a simple gold ribbon around the front of the card.

Holiday Joy Gift Card Money Holder

The Holiday Joy Gift Card/Money Holder is great for sticking a little money

or a Starbucks gift card.  Who wouldn’t love getting that for Christmas?

The card uses the Coffee Die Set from The Maker’s Movement.

The sleeve around the coffee cup uses the NEW Eileen Hull Sweater Embossing Plate*.

Holiday Joy Gift Card Money Holder

Directions:

  • The tri-fold card was made from a 5 ½” x 9 ¾” piece of Kraft Cardstock. I scored the cardstock on the 3 ¼” and 6 ½” mark.
  • Adhere the green plaid layer to the gold cardstock layer. Adhere onto the front of the tri-fold card.
  • Assemble and adhere the die-cut pieces of the coffee cup onto the front of the card. The red plaid pieces and vellum coffee lid have been made into stickers using a Xyron Creative Station.  The “coffee sleeve” was embossed using the sweater embossing folder.
  • Remove the backing off the gridded transfer paper. Apply the transfer paper over the word “Holiday”.  Gently rub over the transfer paper to make sure the word has transferred.  Apply onto the top of the card.
  • Add clear adhesive enamel dots to the lid of the coffee cup.
  • The transfer paper is reusable. Use the transfer paper to apply the small snowflake onto the cup.
  • On the inside of the card… Open the trifold card. Adhere the thin red plaid adhesive strip to the top of the cream cardstock layer.  (Leave a 1/8” margin on the top) Trim the excess paper strip.  Using the transfer paper, transfer the word “Enjoy” under the red strip.
  • On the third-panel measure and mark 1 ½” on the outside edge of the panel. On the inside fold of the third panel, measure and mark 2 ½”.  Draw a line from the 2 ½” mark to the 1 ½” mark.  Cut along the line and the inside fold to create a diagonal pocket flap.  Adhere the thin green strip to the top of the diagonal panel and trim excess.
  • Punch a small hole in the center of the green panel and attach the small cream tag with twine. Apply the small red plaid heart to the center of the tag.
  • Add adhesive to the bottom and side of the flap. Adhere flap to the center panel.

How to Make an Elegant and Easy Monochromatic Holiday Card.

When it comes to making cards for the Holidays, two words come to mind, elegant and easy.  This Merry little card is both.  With a few simple tricks and tips, this card is a snap to make.

Directions:

  • Choose several different shades of red cardstock.  (I used four.)  Cut into 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips.
  • To make assembly easy.  I used the Xyron Create a Sticker to add adhesive to the back of the strips of cardstock.
  • Trim the larger strips into 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ smaller strips.
  • Cut a 4 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ piece of red cardstock to use as the base.  Starting at the top, add the strips of red cardstock to the base.
  • Die-cut two branches using the Winter Foliage Die Set and Gold Chrome Vinyl.
  • Die-cut small snowflakes using the gold chrome vinyl and the snowflakes found in the Snow Globe Die Set.
  • Die-cut the words “Be Merry” using gold chrome Vinyl and the Be Merry Die Set.
  • Remove the white protective backing from the vinyl and use as stickers to decorate the front of the card.  I used the edge of the cardstock strip to help me line up the words.
  • Add red metal nailhead sticker embellishments onto the branch.
  • Cut a 4 3/4″ x 6 3/4″ piece of Chrome Adhesive Vinyl and adhere to a white 5″ x 7″ card.
  • Adhere the striped card front to the card base.

Happy Holidays Card

This simple card was easy to create.  I used the tall skinny alphabet dies to cut out the letters to

spell Happy Holidays.  To make assembly easy, I ran the paper through my Xyron Create A

Sticker before die-cutting the letters.

Draw a faint pencil line on the white cardstock to help line up the letters.

Erase the line after you’ve stuck on the letters.

How to Create a Beautiful Poinsettia Christmas Card using Distress Ink.

I like making clean and simple cards.

But everyone once in a while, a card just calls out to be inked.

This card was one of those projects.   (It’s still kind of clean and simple.)

Directions:

  • Run several strips of 3″ cream cardstock through the Xyron Sticker Maker*. The sticker maker adds an even layer of adhesive to the back of the cardstock. Do this before die-cutting to make each small piece a sticker. (it makes assembly so much easier)
  • Using the Winter Foliage Die Set and the Crossover II Die-Cut Machine*, die-cut the pieces out of cream cardstock. You will need 8-smooth leaves for the flower, 4-pointed leaves for the foliage, 4-pine branches, and 2-small leaf die-cuts.

  • Ink the edges of the leaves using an Ink Blending Tool* and the Distress Inks.
  • For the base of the card, cut 4 3/4″ x 6 3/4″ piece of woodgrain scrapbook paper. Adhere the woodgrain paper onto a 5″ x 7″ gold cardstock layer. Adhere both layers onto a 5 1/4″ x 7 1/4″ cream card base.
  • Start with 4 of the smooth leaves inked with the Barn Door Red Ink and place onto the front of the top of the card. Place them so that they line up opposite of each other.
  • Place and stager the four additional red leaves on top of the first layer of leaves.
  • Adhere the leaves, foliage and, pine stem under the poinsettia flower.

  • Die-cut three small circles (from the Winter Foliage Die Set) out of gold cardstock and adhere to the center of the flower.
  • Die-cut the words “Be Merry” out of cream cardstock ran through the Xyron Sticker Maker* and place the stickered “Be Merry” onto the front of the card.

Making a Christmas Card from non-Christmas paper.

You don’t always need traditional Christmas paper and embellishments to make

a Christmas card.

One of the perks of being on the Xyron Design Team is receiving product from partnering

companies like Wild Whisper.

I recently received Wild Whisper’s “forever & always” collection…

a soft mix of paper including backgrounds of banners and labels.

I considered making an everyday type project, but, since I’m currently in full blown

“Christmas Crazy”, a Christmas card was in order.

I cut out a few banners and labels from the background paper.

I added letter and number stickers to create my holiday embellishments.

My Xyron Creative Station* made quick work of putting the layers together.

I added a  small wood snowflake, sheer white ribbon and adhesive pearl rhinestones

to finish off the card.  I like the non-traditional soft peach and blue.   (It’s not my usual red.)

Impress your friends and family this Holiday…

with a gatefold card that looks a lot harder than it really is.

This may not be a beginner card for some, but, I promise it really is not hard.

A few layers and a few simple steps and you’ll be done in no time.

The supply list may seem long…

but you can easily adapt the card with supplies you have on hand.

 

This is what I Used to make the Reindeer Star Card:                                           (*affiliate link)

Directions:

  1. Cut a piece of cream cardstock 7 1/2″ x 5″.  Score and fold on the 2 1/2″ mark to create a 5″ x 5″ card base with flap.
  2. Cut a piece of red patterned paper 2 1/4″ x 4 3/4″ and adhere to the front of the flap.
  3. Cut a 2 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ piece of light green patterned paper and adhere onto the bottom of the red patterned paper.  Repeat for the inside flap.
  4. Cut a piece of dark green patterned paper 4 3/4″ x 4 3/4″.  Adhere to the inside of the card.
  5. Cut a piece of red plaid paper 2 1/4″ x 4 3/4″ and adhere onto the bottom of the dark green patterned paper.
  6. Add a strip of thin washi tape to the seam of the patterned papers.
  7. Apply White and Gold Foil washi tape to a piece of white cardstock.reindeer-star-card-creating-a-washi-tape-background-sues-creative-workshop
  8. Cut two medium washi tape stars using the star die and Big Shot Cutting/Embossing Machine*.reindeer-star-card-cutting-the-star-dies-sues-creative-workshop
  9. Cut two larger stars from the gold metallic cardstock.reindeer-star-card-opened-sues-creative-workshop
  10. Adhere the first star halfway onto the flap (with the other half hanging over)  Adhere second star directly onto the back of the first star.
  11. Adhere medium washi tape stars onto the middle of the large gold stars.
  12. Cut one small gold cardstock and mount it to the middle of the front washi tape star with thin 3D foam mounting squares.reindeer-star-card-close-up-sues-creative-workshop
  13. Add small “white stag” dimensional sticker to center of the smallest star.  Add a small red adhesive rhinestone to the tip of the stags nose.
  14. Adhere a piece of gold cardstock onto the Stick It Adhesive Sheets*.  Die cut the words “Merry Christmas” using the Christmas Phrases die and stick onto card.
  15. Tie a thin gold ribbon around the flap with a small gold jingle bells and you’re done.

Finished Size:  5” x 5”  (may take additional postage to mail)
