Create a Iridescent Birthday Card using StyletechCraft Opal Vinyl

Create a Quick and Easy Iridescent Birthday Card with StyleTechCraft Opal Vinyl.

When making a card using StyleTechCrafts Opal Vinyl, a regular picture just won’t do.

You need to see the shimmery iridescent fun.

StyleTechCraft’s Opal Vinyl is one of the coolest vinyl they have.

The colors shift dramatically based on light and their surroundings and adds a little

razzle dazzle to this simple birthday card.

To make the Birthday Card I used…                                        (*amazon affiliate links)

Directions:

  • Cut several 3/4″ strips of Opal Vinyl and stick it onto a 4 1/2″ X 6″ piece of black cardstock.  For my card I used Pink, Blue and Green Opal Vinyl.
  • Trim the excess vinyl strips from the sides of the cardstock.
  • Cut the cardstock 4″ x 5 1/4″.

  • The embossing folder creates a wonderful raised background.

  • Using a weeding tool carefully remove the negative spaces in and around the letters.
  • Place a piece of Vinyl Transfer Tape* over the letters.  Rub over the letters using a vinyl scraper tool to help the vinyl cling
  • Apply words onto a piece of 3 1/4″ x 4 1/2″ white cardstock.
  • Remove transfer tape.

  • To give the card additional dimension…I added a piece of thin foam onto the back of the white cardstock.

  • Adhere the layers onto a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ white card.

My 90’s Kitchen Remodel

When we bought our house in 1996, a beautiful Southern Colonial…

we fell in love with the large trees and expansive yard.

What we didn’t fall in love with was the kitchen.

My husband hated the dark dated 80’s cabinets and blue and white windmill tile backsplash.

Being the frugal person that I am, I didn’t mind the tiles and wanted to live with it for awhile.

(2018 Kitchen Before Make Over)

Persuaded that the updates “had” to be done, we made over the kitchen in true 90’s fashion.

Victorian was the trend, so a nice tea cup border and complimentary wallpaper was installed.

To keep costs low, we decided to keep the original footprint and the 6″ x 6″ terra cotta tile floor.

I was young and inexperienced.

Because we didn’t have a lot of expendable money

we’ve spent the last few years doing minor changes.

The first to go was the tea cup border and terra cotta floors.

We had large 18″ x 18″ tiles installed to help the small kitchen look bigger.

Since I knew I wanted to eventually go with a lighter counter top,

a darker color was used on the floor.

Fast forward to 2018…

It was around this time last year when we started discussing a Kitchen Remodel.

We visited a Kitchen Showroom and talked to a designer on how we could refigure our kitchen.

We have a large peninsula in our small kitchen with cabinets overhead.  (a 80’s trend)

It gives us a lot of great counter space and storage.

The problem, it closes off the kitchen and doesn’t allow natural light to come in.

And…if you’re taller than 5′ 2” (which isn’t a problem for me) it’s hard to have a

conversation with anyone in the dining room.  It completely blocks their view.

We made arrangements for the designer to come and look at our kitchen.

The first thing she said was “your kitchen has a good flow”.  (her first mistake)

She drew up 3 designs for our approval.  None of the designs really had what we wanted.

She didn’t come up with a solution for all the cabinets that I’d be giving up.  (mistake #2)

We’d also need to re-do the kitchen tile and patch the wood floor in the dining room.

Not to mention the fact that we’d spend $20K plus to have the work done.

We weren’t sure we had the energy for a complete remodel of this scale.

(I’m not young and inexperienced anymore.)

So after a lot of contemplation and discussion, we decided to try cleaning the cabinets.

We used Murphy Oil Multi-Use Wood Cleaner*to clean the cabinets and

Rejuvenate Cabinet & Furniture Restorer*to give them back their original shine.

It took several days of cleaning and polishing the cabinets. (2-3 coats for a good shine)

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the cabinets looked.

We had originally discussed painting the cabinets and decided to “try” cleaning and polishing

them first.   My husband had promised, that if I wasn’t happy we could try painting them.

I was happy with the results of the cleaning and polishing.

Then for $220 we added new polish nickel hardware to replace the old brass ones.

We also installed new LED lighting under the peninsula.

Since I was saving so much money…I splurged by picking a beautiful quartz counter top.

It looks lovely with my red and white dishes.

Next, came the issue of the kitchen sink.

I wanted a off-white “bisque” porcelain sink to complement the beautiful counter top.

We looked around at several of the big box Home Improvement Stores.

We finally found the sink I wanted, only to find out that because of a fire

in one of the main manufacturing locations the sink wouldn’t be available until June.

I’d waited this long what’s a little more.

Then…I found out I couldn’t get the sink until July, then we were told they weren’t sure

when it would be available, then I was told November.  (Say What?)

I’ve had a “busy” looking kitchen for so long, what I wanted now was clean and simple.

Picking a tile should of been easy.

I had it narrowed down to 2 or 3 tiles depending on how the sink dilemma went.

I was told to wait before choosing to see how everything went together.

Not wanting to wait until November, we decided to go with a in-stock white porcelain sink.

We paid to have the white sink installed and it didn’t look bad.

All I had to do was decide on the tile.

Within a few days of the sink installation, I noticed spots around the edges of the sink.

It looked like rust.

The plumber came back out, re-caulked the sink and low and behold the spots came back.

My husband called the manufacturer of the sink, we had a couple options,

we could take the sink out and paint the bottom and see if that solved the problem

or they could send us a new sink.

During the conversation with the customer service guy,

my husband mentioned that we originally had wanted the “bisque” sink.

“I can send you the bisque sink if you want?”

It was decided to send the bisque sink (which costs almost double than white).

In the meantime…the white sink had started to grow on us

and the tile selection had come down to which sink we decided to use.

Porcelain sinks are very heavy, so it wasn’t a “let’s just try it out” kind of decision.

With the plumber charging $400 to install, a final decision had to made in advance.

In the end, we decided to go with the bisque sink and off white subway tile.

The tile was installed a week before Christmas.

And.. I am Happy!  (phew…what a process)

I love my “new kitchen” and the way the light reflects off the tile and counter.

It is bright and cheery with the clean and simple look I was going for.

Final tally…The cost of the make-over ended up being approximately 1/4 of what a total

kitchen remodel would have been.

On a curious side note… I just got an email last week from the kitchen designer following up on her designs.  (her third mistake)

Diamond Art…a new trend in crafting

Diamond Art by Leisure Arts

This past week-end was a stormy, nasty, stay indoors kind of week-end.

The perfect time for crafting and learning/trying something different.

I’d been wanting to start the new Rose Diamond Art kit that I received from Leisure Arts.

I knew the kit was going to take a little time and I was just waiting for the perfect opportunity

to give it my full attention.

What is Diamond Arts?

It is a new trend in crafting.

It’s similar to cross stitching and paint by numbers.

“A little bit tedious, curiously addicting and extremely satisfying.”

It was so addicting that I didn’t want to stop…

I had to bring it down onto the kitchen counter so I could work on the it while cooking dinner.

Leisure Arts makes kits for beginners, intermediate and advanced.

They have a great selection of Diamond Arts Kits for both kids and adults.

The Rose Diamond Art kit includes:

  • One High Quality Printed Fabric
  • Gems Pre-sorted by Color
  • Stylus
  • Craft Tray
  • Wax Piece
  • Comfort Grip
  • Instructions

The rose design is pre-printed on the fabric with the symbols for the Diamond Art gems and

is coated with a special adhesive.  You pick the gem up using the stylus and place the gem

onto the corresponding symbol on the printed fabric.

It really is that easy.  Great for kids age 8 and up.

The kits comes with photos and great instructions.

If you’re a visual learner like me, check out the video below.

LeisureArts.com has a great selection of Diamond Arts kits that you can purchase online.

When your favorite cashmere sweater has a hole…

When your favorite Cashmere Sweater has a hole, you make it into something new.

I was pretty bummed when I found out my favorite sweater had a hole in it.

My first instinct was to throw it in the garbage.

After retrieving my sweater from the throw-away pile…

I decided to make it into a super soft pillow instead.

To make the DIY Sweater Pillow I used:                                  (*affiliate link)

DIY Upcycled Sweater Pillow

Directions:

  • Turn the sweater inside out. Line up the pillow form with the sweater to determine the best placement to hide the holes.
  • For my sweater, since the holes were on one side…I decided to sew the bottom of the sweater together first and insert the pillow to determine how much I needed to cut off the other side.
  • Cut the sweater slightly larger than the pillow form.
  • Remove pillow form and sew the second side together.

  • To Personalize my pillow, Turn the sweater back to the right sides and iron the Joy Iron-On Embroidered Letters. Cover letters with a clean, soft cloth and iron the letters for 30 seconds. Turn sweater pillow cover inside out, cover with cloth and iron for an additional 30 seconds. Allow the letters to cool before finishing the pillow.

  • Because there is a lot of give with the sweater material.  I was able to sew the 4th side halfway and stuff the pillow form inside.  I hand stitched the pillow closed.

  • To dress up the pillow…I created a sash to go around the pillow by sewing together flannel scraps.

  • Secure the sash around the pillow using a couple of big black buttons.

The pillow is perfect for marking my spot on my favorite comfy chair.

Layout and Cards with Jillibean Soup’s Garden Harvest Collection

Layouts and Cards with Jillibean Soup’s Garden Harvest Collection

This is one of my favorite pictures of my three kids now that they’ve grown up.

Silly, Carefree and Serious

It captures their personalities perfectly.

I have this picture in a frame in my family room,

but, I wanted to use it for a scrapbook layout as well.  (It is my favorite, after all.)

I used Jillibean Soup Garden Harvest Collection Pack* to make my layout and a few extra cards.

I love a “clean and simple” card.

“You are my happy” card.

Creativation 2019

These are the moments that remind me how lucky I am to work in the Creative Industry.

Opening Day…waiting for the show to open

Last month, I got the opportunity to fly to Phoenix to work and attend the Creativation Show.

For those of you that don’t know what Creativation is, it is the annual trade show for everyone

involved in the Hobby and Creative Industry.

Manufacturers, Distributors, Retailers, Designers, Bloggers.

For me, as a designer, it’s also the opportunity to reconnect face to face with friends

that I only get to see once a year.  (you know…”my tribe”)

Oh… and the chance to see what’s new and the latest and greatest in the industry.

Make and Takes in the Deflecto Booth

I always have great intentions of taking tons of pictures and possibly a video or two.

But in Reality…I also have to work.  (or play)

Each day, I taught a different “make and take” in the Deflecto Booth.

Deflecto is one of the great companies I have the honor of working with.

Deflecto is known for their awesome craft storage.

The Great Wall of Deflecto Stack ‘N Go Caddy Wheel Base, Craft Organizers*

At Creativation we like to have a little fun.

Each day in the Deflecto Booth they host a Stack ‘N Go Caddy Challenge,

attendees compete to see who can fill and stack the caddies with the fastest time.

(The one with the best time each day wins a American Express Gift Card.)

It’s a big hit and can get quite competitive at times.  At the end of the show, if you’ve got

your special postcard stamped, they give away all caddies used to build the great wall.

It’s a fun booth to work in.

Another company I have the privilege of working with is StyleTechCraft.

They have the best adhesive vinyl to work with.  (and they treat me like a queen)

As you can see…I had a three hour demo on Saturday.

Graphic 45 Booth

I love all their new paper collections.

The Graphic 45 booth is always one of my favorites because their samples are always

so beautiful and inspiring.

Bloom where you are planted…(I need this collection)

Another one of my favorite booths is the Jillibean Soup booth.

Besides being know for their fun paper collections they also have a wonderful line called

Mixed the Media.  I love everything about this collection.

I NEED these windows.  (just saying)

I also took a little “me time” and did a make and take in the Jillibean booth.

This is from their Embroidery Hoop Art collection.

Simple Stories Booth

This is embarrassing.  As much as I LOVE Simple Stories, this is is the only picture I took.

Sometimes…I get to talking too much (and drooling) to take pictures.

Tim Holtz ideal-olgy Booth

As a “vintage lover” this booth always stops me in my tracks.

Idea-ology Booth Make and Take

Look what I made.  Isn’t he cute?

At Creativation there is a large variety of classes that attendees can take.

Business classes, workshops.  This is from the Waffleflower class I took.

I got to use their new “Water Media Mat” that will be available next month.

I always wish I would have taken more pictures.

My pictures are only a super small sample of all the wonderful and creative things

to see and do at the Creativation Show.

If you’d like to see more…

Let’s have a Sedona Adventure…

Last month, after the Creativation show in Phoenix, we took a little extra time and went

to Sedona for a couple days.  I would love to say it was pure relaxation.

But… I think we did more walking (and hiking) than I did all week at the show.

When we went to Sedona last year, we took a Red Rock Jeep Tour.

This year, we did a lot more exploring on our own and after we got tired,

we took a trolley tour up to the Chapel of the Holy Cross.

The chapel and the views did not disappoint.

When we were getting ready to leave, I offered to take pictures for a couple of girls from our

trolley tour.  One of the girls took this photo for us in return.

She took our usual “old couple pose” and then said “now, do something else”.

It took us by surprise and this is what we got.  My favorite picture of the trip.

I don’t even mind the photo bomb in the trolley window.

For my Sedona Adventure Layout…

I started with a piece of woodgrain scrapbook paper and a Sedona map I picked up.

I used a SVG file and my Silhouette Cameo Wireless Cutting Machine* to cut the words

“let’s have an Adventure” in Black and Red Glossy Adhesive Vinyl from .

I also cut a circle and a smaller arrow to mark on the map the spot the picture was taken.

It’s an easy way to tell a story.

FYI…Even though StyleTechCraft vinyl is not acid-free, it’s still great for creating titles and accents on your scrapbook pages.  Just make sure not to use it directly on your photo’s.

Creating a Mini Album with Xyron

Creating a Mini Album using the Xyron Creative Station…

This week the Xyron Design Team was asked to post about our favorite Xyron Product.

With so many wonderful Xyron items to choose from it was a hard decision.

When it comes to making Mini Albums, Tags and Altered Home Décor pieces,

the Xyron Creative Station* is hands down my favorite product to use.

When I go to the effort to create, I don’t want my projects falling apart.

With the Xyron Creative Station* you get complete coverage, no gluing, no wrinkling,

no bubbles!  There are so many refill cartridge options available in both the 9″ and 5″ sizes.

*Disclosure:  This blog post uses affiliate links.  If you choose to make a purchase using one of the links, I receive a small commission (at no additional cost to you) that helps offset the costs of maintaining this blog.  Thanks for your support!

To make my Mini Albums…

  • I use chipboard or mat board for the base of my Mini Album and cut it to my preferred size.
  • I cut decorative scrapbook paper to fit onto the base.
  • Put the paper design side up on the  *Xyron Creative Station, 9″ crank the handle to run the paper through the machine.  As it moves through the Xyron Creative Station it adds adhesive to the back side of the paper.  Easy to use and it doesn’t need any electricity.
  • Line up the paper onto the chipboard.

  • Create extra pages for the inside of the Mini Album using cardstock or coordinating scrapbook paper.
  • Bind the album together using a Book Binding Machine*.
  • Embellish the front of the album with frames, flowers, charms, stickers and ribbon.

  • I created a frame for the cover using chipboard and scrapbook paper and cutting it out using a steel rule die.
  • You can run the frame through the Xyron Creative Station* also.
  • The Creative Station makes quick work of putting my Mini Album together.

The paper used on my Mini Album was from Simple Stories Merry & Bright Collection*
