The First Rule of Picking…

The First Rule of Picking

The First Unspoken Rule of a Picking a Great Curb Find is…

NEVER PICK FROM YOUR NEIGHBORS CURB!!!

At least, that’s what my daughter-in-law says.

(So, what do you do when you see something that screams to be saved?)

I live in a friendly neighborhood in a small town.

I have a few neighbors who don’t like to have garage sales.

They will put plants, gardening items, and even vegetables

on the curb to share with neighbors.  I have great neighbors!

Plant Stand Make Over

The metal plant stand.

I had looked at this plant stand sitting by the curb for a couple of days.

The evening before garbage pickup, while my husband

and I were taking the dog on his evening walk, we decided to grab it.

(I double-checked with the neighbor the next day.)

Plant Stand Make Over

I didn’t mind it the way it was.  I like a little chippy goodness.

The problem was every time you bumped it,

or the wind blew, you would see little flakes everywhere.

Plant Stand Make Over-Sue's Creative Workshop www.sueeldred.com 5266

I figured it would be an easy-peasy project.

All I would need to make it look great would be a can of black spray paint*.

(and a little scraping)

I went to the home store and picked up a small wire brush* and

black Rustoleum spray paint*.

It seems that the metal stand was coated in plastic and not painted.

As flaky as it seems, I soon realized it would take much more elbow grease than I intended.

Not to shy away from a challenge, I tried the metal brush*, a metal scraper tool*,

a palm sander*, and steel wool*.

Plant Stand Make Over

I finally decided it was “good enough” and spray-painted it black

to match the black railing on my deck.

Plant Stand Make Over-Sue's Creative Workshop www.sueeldred.com 5425

I really like it out there.  (Dexter agrees.)

But now I think I need to find another one.

Gift Box using Eileen Hull’s Stacking Drawer Die

Little Gift Box made with the Sizzix Stacking Drawers Die by Eileen Hull.

A Little Gift Box using the Stacking Drawer Die*.

Earlier this month, Sizzix and Eileen Hull re-released the Stacking Drawer Die

along with several other dies.  (you can see the original post here)

While there are several ways to use this die,

I thought the Stacking Drawers* would also make a perfect little gift box.

To make the gift box…

Little Gift Box made with the Sizzix Stacking Drawers Die by Eileen Hull.

  • I like to paint the mat board with Deco Art Multi-Media Acrylic Paint* before I assemble the box.
  • Fold the matboard and adhere to the ends of the die-cut using a Strong Double-Sided Tape*.
  • Retouch the paint if necessary.
  • FYI…If you use a thinner mat board for the bottom layer of the drawer, it is easier to open and close.

Little Gift Box made with the Sizzix Stacking Drawers Die by Eileen Hull.

  • Another trick to make the drawer run smoother is to rub Clear Paraffin Wax* on the bottom of the drawer and the bottom of the box.

Little Gift Box made with the Stacking Drawers Die

  • To decorate the box, I used a Xyron Disposable Sticker Maker* maker to add adhesive to the back of my paper.  It’s a quick and easy way to cover the sides of the box.

Mini Steamer Trunk and more…

Mini Steamer Trunk

The Mini Steamer Trunk

I have been fascinated with old vintage things for a long time.

Just look around my house.
You will find vintage items sprinkled in every room.

Some items have a good story or are family keepsakes.
The others are there because they make me happy

So… When Sizzix and Eileen Hull re-released the Treasure Box Die*

and the Stacking Drawer Die*, I decided to make a Miniature Steamer Trunk.

A little Inspiration…

Sometimes, I get lucky, and I get a vision of how I want a project to turn out.

The mini steamer trunk was one of those projects.

I found an image online for my inspiration.

(I’m so happy with the way it turned out.)

Mini Steamer Trunk-Sue's Creative Workshop www.sueeldred.com 4864

The base of the Steamer Trunk was die-cut using a black textured mat board.

I painted the trunk with a mix of browns, and black acrylic to give it a woodgrain look.

To make it look like a steamer trunk, I glued thin strips of black mat board

to the top and sides of the trunk.

To give it a shine I painted the trunk with Mod Podge Satin Sealer*.

The Treasure Box* measures 3 1/4” x 5 1/4” x 4”.

Mini Steamer Trunk-Sue's Creative Workshop www.sueeldred.com 4826

I painted three Stacking Drawers* the same as the base of the trunk.

I added decorative scrapbook paper on the front of the drawers and

the inside of the lid.  I think it looks like old wallpaper.

The Steamer trunk is one of the projects I made for the Eileen Hull and Sizzix June Release Party.

Floral Lattice Card

The Floral Lattice Card was made using the

NEW Painterly Blooms & Background Thinlet Dies from Eileen Hull*.

I inked the background of the card using dye inks on watercolor paper.

I spritzed the paper with a mini mister* to give the background a mottled effect.

I used a palette knife* to spread white embossing paste* over the lattice stencil

from the Watercolour Flowers & Lattice Layered Stencils Set*.

FYI…The Watercolour Florals & Lattice stencil set* was inspired by a watercolor picture that Eileen painted.

The set included 4 stencils.  Three stencil layers give dimension and the fourth layer, a versatile lattice design, that can be used to create a plaid pattern!

DIY Inspirational Trays

DIY Inspirational Tray using StyleTechCraft Vinyl

Looking for a Quick and Easy DIY Gift Idea?

These Inspiration Trays are Special End of the Year Teacher Gifts.

My sister works at a private Christian school and asked me to

help her personalize gifts for a couple of special co-workers.

She’s a great gift giver and likes to give thoughtful gifts.

(Each teacher was asked to fill out a survey of things they

liked including their favorite scripture verse.)

  • To start the project, she picked out a couple of Unfinished Wood Trays*
  • The bottom of the tray was painted white and lightly sanded before adding the vinyl scripture.
  • We measured the inside of the tray to determine the size of the scripture we wanted to use.

We noticed after the trays were finished that we had somehow

missed the two dots on the Esther verse.

We were able to easily recreate the dots and add them to

the finished tray.  I think they turned out great!

In addition to the finished tray, the gift included greenery, a candle, and a jar of “love notes” from the students.

The kindergarten students were asked what they loved about their teacher.

I didn’t get a chance to read them, but I’m sure they were interesting.

How to make a Farmhouse Garden Sign

How to make a Farmhouse Garden Sign

How to make a Personalized Farmhouse Garden Sign.

The “Garden sign” is a quick and easy Dollar Tree project.

Now that garden season is upon us, my mind is distracted with all things gardening.

I will start planting next week, and I can’t wait.

In anticipation of this year’s garden, I created a garden sign

using an inexpensive galvanized banner purchased at Dollar Tree*.

I made it with a traditional red, white, and blue color scheme.

Summer Blooms Mini Album

Summer Bloom Mini Album

How to make a Summer Blooms Mini Album…

I love Summer Blooms and fell in love with the new Bloom Collection*

I made this cute little pocket-sized mini album.

  • Cut two 6″ x 8-1/2″pieces of decorative scrapbook paper for the front and inside of the cover.
  • Lay decorative scrapbook paper (design side up) on the Xyron Creative Station* crank the handle to run the paper through the machine.  As it moves through the Xyron Creative Station it adds adhesive to the back side of the paper.
  • Easy to use and it doesn’t need any electricity.
  • I like using the Xyron Creative Station* when making mini books because you get complete coverage, no wrinkling, no bubbles!

Summer Bloom Mini Album

  • Cut a piece of mat board 6″ x 8-1/2″.
  • Adhere the decorative paper on each side of the mat board.
  • Lay the covered mat board over the notebook die* sandwiched between two cutting plates.
  • Crank the handle of the Sizzix Big Shot Die Cutting Machine* and run the die through the machine.  The Big Shot will cut and score the mat board.

  • Cut a 2 1/4″ x 5″ strip of decorative paper to use for the spine and run it through the Xyron Creative Station*.  Adhere the strip to the spine of the book.
  • Cut 5 cardstock pages using the notebook die.
  • Crease the cardstock on the center score lines.

Summer Bloom Mini Album

  • Wrap the twine around the inside creases and around the outside of the book cover to secure the pages.
  • FYI…I wanted this Mini Album to be all about the pictures, so I kept the pages white. There are no fancy embellishments or special pages inside this album.

Summer Bloom Mini Album-Sue's Creative Workshop www.sueeldred.com 4776

  • After I had all my pages together, I tied the pieces of twine together in one knot on the spine and added a small metal heart charm.   I placed a small floral sticker from the Bloom Collection* to the center of the heart.
  • As an afterthought, after I took the above pictures, I added Sizzix Effects™ Liquid Gloss* over the heart. The Liquid Gloss gives the heart a clear domed look and will seal in the sticker.

We are all a Work in Progress-How to Upcycle a promotional water bottle

How to Upcycle a promotional water bottle.

A few months ago, I joined a gym.

I did it for a couple of reasons.

The first was for my physical self.

And the second for my mental health.

What I didn’t expect was the community I would find

and the friends I would make.

And while I haven’t seen huge improvements in my waistline,

I have seen improvement in my ability to do more than I thought I could.

I’m still a work in Progress.

We are all a Work in Progress-How to Upcycle a promotional water bottle.

Wanting to be like the “cool kids” and help save the planet from plastic water bottles,

I told my husband I needed a metal water bottle to take to the gym.

“I have one at work you can have,” he said.  (he knows I’m cheap)

His company had given them metal water bottles that included the company’s core values.

While the values are good and everything, I wanted something different.

I wanted something more inspirational, more personal.

Being a creative person, I brought out my favorite StyleTechCraft adhesive vinyl.

DIY Gold Bunny Silhouette Pillow & Treat Bag

DIY Gold Bunny Silhouette Pillow & Treat Bag

Add a little glam this Spring with this cute Gold Bunny Silhouette Pillow.

and who doesn’t like that?

DIY Gold Bunny Silhouette Pillow & Treat Bag

How to make the Gold Silhouette Bunny Pillow:

  • Choose your fabric.  Cut the fabric into two squares or rectangles of equal size.  (I cut my cream fabric to 14″ x 14″ to make a 12″ pillow.)
  • Place the two fabric pieces together right-side in.
  • Sew the edges together, leaving a 2-inch opening along one side.
  • Turn the pillow right-side out.
  • Fold the raw edges in and press them flat.
  • Using the Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die-Cutting Machine* and an SVG file from The Silhouette Store, I created a design for the pillow.
  • Cut the design using Gold Heat Transfer Vinyl* making sure to mirror the image.
  • Place the shiny side down on the cutting mat.
  • After you’ve cut the design, weed the excess material away from the design, leaving only the parts you want to transfer.
  • Position the design on your fabric.  Use an iron or a heat press to apply heat and pressure to the design, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Peel off the transfer tape.
  • Stuff the pillow with Poly-Fil®* and sew the opening closed.

DIY Gold Bunny Silhouette Treat Bag

I knew a head of time that I wanted to make a couple of small treat bags.  I decreased the size of the bunny and cut it at the same time as the pillow design.

How to make the Bunny Treat Bag:

  • Cut a piece of gold polka dot fabric approx. 10″ x 14″.
  • On both ends of the fabric, fold down approx. 1″ and sew a seam across the top.  That should leave you with a 3/4″ pocket.
  • Fold the material in half and sew the remaining sides closed.
  • Trim excess material on the seams and turn the fabric inside out to reveal the bag.
  • Iron the gold HTV bunny on the front of the bag.  (see above directions)
  • Cut two small slits on the top pocket of the bag on each end.
  • Cut two 24″ pieces of gold ribbon.
  • Attach a small safety pin to the end of a piece of ribbon.  Thread the ribbon through the top of the bag, remove the safety pin, and knot the ribbon.
  • On the opposite end of the bag, thread the second piece of ribbon through.
  • Pull both ends of the ribbon to gather and close the bag.

DIY Gold Bunny Silhouette Treat Bag

With all the warm weather we’ve had lately, Spring Fever has hit me pretty hard.

I’ve completely rid my decor of anything resembling Winter.

I’m ready for Spring, Bunnies, and Flowers!

New 2024 Sizzix Dies by Eileen Hull

New Sizzix Dies by Eileen Hull

New Dies from Eileen Hull and Sizzix

I’m excited that I finally get to share the samples I made using the New Sizzix dies by Eileen Hull.  It’s always fun getting new dies to play with.  And these are now my new favorites. (that is until next time)

Embossed Wedding Card

Elegantly Embossed Wedding Card

My first card uses Sizzix® 3D Textured Impressions® A5 Embossing Folder-Lace by Eileen Hull*.

I really love the new larger size.  The Lace 3D embossing folder is so amazing! It’s a new LARGE size measuring 8 1/2” x 5 3/4”. It works great on bigger journal covers, card backgrounds and on home decor pieces.

The base of the card was embossed using cream cardstock.  I used a piece of old “Baby 2 Bride” paper from Graphic 45 for the front of the card.  I used pearlized cardstock in pearl and silver for the layers.

Embossed Birthday Card

Blue Embossed Birthday Card

I created a delicate background for a feminine birthday card by inking the embossing folder with blue ink.  I inked directly onto the embossing folder and placed white cardstock inside.  I’m in love with how soft and subtle it looks.

How about a new Mini Book?

This one uses the Sizzix® ScoreBoards™ Die – Mini Book by Eileen Hull®*.

Listen to Your Heart Mini Book-Sue's Creative Workshop www.sueeldred.com 3911

The Mini Book is great because you can create a book using your scraps. This book measures 3 3/4” x 2 1/4” and comes with a strap/handle and tiny label for the book cover. It makes a great bag topper if you fold it in the middle. It is also the perfect size for business cards. Die cut it from felt and stitch up a tiny wallet!

Do you love storage box dies?

This box uses the Sizzix® ScoreBoards™ XL Die – Storage Box by Eileen Hull®*.

The Storage Box is an XL ScoreBoard die measuring 4” square, the largest square box yet! This box is constructed with a removable top and may be used in many ways, such as organizing desk and office supplies, as a gift box, storing craft supplies and packaging for baked treats.

Enjoy the Moment Storage Box

I love how easy this was to put together and what a perfect size it is.

Enjoy The Moment Storage Box and Mini Desk Organizer

Of course, I had to make a mini desk organizer to match the storage box.

Sizzix 666560 Faux Postage Thinlet Die by Eileen Hull

Eileen also created a new Faux Postage Thinlet Die* that I didn’t get around to making a sample for.  (Faux Postage Thinlet Card sample post to come later this month.)

The full panel is designed to fit on a 5” x 7” card and creates a fun postage stamp effect. You can also cut (or tear) each stamp apart and use the individual pieces as a miniature work of art! These dies coordinate with similar dies: Snail Mail (A-2 card size) and Mini Slimline (6” x 3”).

Cantilever Jewelry Box

Last month, Sizzix reintroduced a few older “classic” dies,

including the Cantilever Box Die*.

I promised I’d make one, and I finally made a Cantilever box

Sizzix Canteliveer Box Die

Putting it all together…

  • Included on the back of the die-cut packaging are image directions on how to assemble the box.
  • Cut out the pieces as show in the picture above.
  • I used three sheets of the Sizzix Making Essentials Matboard* to die-cut all the pieces used to make the Cantilever Jewelry Box.

Materials Used:  (*affiliate links)

Sizzix Cantilever Jewelry Box

  • I painted all my die-cut pieces with Black Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint*.  I did that before gluing.
  • The instructions on the box showed using a hot glue gun to assemble the boxes. Eileen told me she uses Zip Dry Adhesive* and rubber bands to assemble the boxes. I wasn’t a big fan of using the hot glue gun and will definitely try the Zip Dry Adhesive* the next time.

Sizzix Cantilever Jewelry Box

  • I cut 1″ strips of a single-sided grey plaid paper and ran them through the Xyron 3″ Disposable Sticker Maker* to add adhesive to the back of the strips.
  • I carefully added the strips around the edges of each box.  Since the paper I used was single-sided, it was easy to cover the boxes.
  • Once all the boxes were assembled, putting the cantilever box together wasn’t too hard.
  • For added stability, I glued the bottom two boxes together.  I also added a 2″ x 6″ piece of black painted matboard to the bottom before adding the feet.
