Rae Dunn Inspired Thrift Store Makeover

Rae Dunn Inspired Thrift Store Makeover

Rae Dunn Inspired Utensil Holder

I’ve been looking for the perfect utensil holder ever since we did our kitchen makeover in 2018.

I was looking for just the right one.  None of the ones I found were what I was looking for.

I found this canister sitting on a thrift store shelf in Wisconsin for only $1.50.

I thought, what the heck.  Not much of a gamble if it doesn’t work.

All I needed was a little bit of StyleTechCraft Black Glossy Vinyl* to make it complete.

I used the “ink-free” font on my Silhouette and stretched the word to make it longer,

giving it the classic Rae Dunn-inspired tall skinny handwritten font.

The word “utensils” is approx. 2″ x 3.

Directions:

  • Instead of hand painting or stenciling on the ribbon, I created the “stencil words” using a Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die Cutting Machine* out of removable vinyl*. I removed the inside of the letters leaving the blank space.
  • Use the transfer tape* to pick up the stenciled word. Place the transfer tape* on the center of the cotton twill ribbon. Rub gently over the transfer paper to transfer the vinyl onto the twill ribbon. Remove the transfer paper.
  • Use a paintbrush to carefully stencil (or paint) the inside of the letters. Allow to dry and remove the vinyl.  (The vinyl words are for one use.)

  • Open the embroidery hoop* and place the flannel on the embroidery hoop. Lay the stenciled twill over the center of the flannel.

  • Place the outside hoop over the flannel and twill and tighten the embroidery hoop. Cut the excess flannel and ribbon from the back of the embroidery hoop.
  • Glue a cardstock circle onto the back of the embroidery hoop.

  • Measure and cut the pine stem to fit around the outside edge of the embroidery hoop.  Glue the craft pine stem* onto the embroidery hoop.
  • Tie a small bow using the striped ribbon.
  • Cut the berry sprig down to size, glue both the ribbon and berry to the top of the hoop.
  • Add natural twine to the top to hang.

A little Americana for your front porch swing

The quickest way to spruce up the front porch swing for summer is with new pillows.

And if your a little bit handy and have a sewing machine why not try making a few of your own.

When it comes to sewing I’m very simple and it doesn’t get much easier than this.

A simple stenciled and stitched pillow.

Deco Arts has so many 12″ stencils in a variety of patterns, you’re sure to find one you’d love.

Additional Products:

Directions:

  1. Lay paper under muslin fabric before stenciling.
  2. Center and tape stencil onto muslin with removable painter’s tape so that the stencil won’t move.
  3. Work one color at a time and mask off with painter’s tape the areas that won’t be painted.
  4. Remove the “star section” of the flag using a craft knife and set aside.
  5. Stenciling is a “dry” brush technique. Using a stencil brush, dip just the tip of your brush into the paint. Tap off excess paint before applying to prevent the paint from seeping under the edges of the stencil.
  6. Apply paint with stencil brush in a straight up and down motion called stippling.
  7. Once you’ve added the red, blue and gold colors. Replace the star section of the flag back onto the stencil and stencil the stars with white paint.
  8. Create a simple pillow by sewing the muslin onto the red and cream ticking fabric.
  9. Stuff pillow with Poly-fil®.

Because I really liked how the table runner turned out…

I decided to create a pillow for the comfy chair in my dining room

I used muslin as a lining for the burlap and on the reverse side of the pillow.

(The pillow, of course, consisted of some sewing.)
