A little Nostalgia

St. Louis 2008So… I thought for Mother’s Day, I would write one of those sappy posts on how much I love being a Mother and how much my kids mean to me.  One that would stand as a tribute to how special I think my kids are.  (Sounds kind of corny, doesn’t it?)

I’d like to say that having kids is easy and that my kids were perfect and that I never made a mistake.  But…that would be far from the truth.  Some days it was hard, really hard.  But those good days, those average days, those lazy days, those small victories days they are what makes everything worthwhile.

I have always wanted to be a mother and I was lucky that God blessed me with three wonderful, creative and distinctly different kids.  (Ages 30, 25 and 15)  Raising these three have been one of the biggest joys of my life.  I am thankful everyday.

Since it’s Mother’s Day and I’m feeling a little nostalgic, I thought I’d share.

Here’s a little bit of their stories.

We had only been married not quite a year when we brought home our very first child.  Jim had been a Marine and on his own for too long.  When we got married, he wanted the whole package, baby and all.  (I was happy to oblige.)

Our oldest son was 3 weeks late, according to the Dr.’s estimate, and we we’re scheduled for an early Saturday morning induction.  I remember playing cards at my sister’s the night before a little nervous about everything.  She said, “There’s nothing to worry about, it’s not like you’re getting a C-section.”  Around 5:00 that evening, after the water broke and still no progress we decided on surgery.  I remember being totally scared being wheeled into the operating room.  The doctor was listening to extremely dramatic classical music. Once Nick was born, everything else didn’t matter.  He was perfect.  A beautiful 7 lb. 7 oz. bundle of joy.  I remember looking at him and thinking just how much his skin looked like velvet.

Once home, life changed dramatically.  We lived in a tiny two bedroom house which was shared with other renters downstairs.  In the beginning, the only way he would fall asleep for the night was to sit on the end of the bed and bounce.  We still laugh at what the downstairs neighbors must have thought.  Seriously, again?

My daughter was born 4 1/2 years later during one of the hottest summers on record.  The day she was born set a record for the hottest day that June.  The record still holds 25 years later.  Even though I went into labor with Stephanie, she was born Cesarean also.  I remember I kept waking up in the recovery room saying “you said girl, right?”, over and over again.  I wanted a little girl so bad.  She was beautiful.  Dark hair, perfect features.  (looking a little more like her daddy)  She was a wonderful addition to our family.  Nick adored her, that is until she started walking.  And…lucky for her, she walked really early.  (right before she turned 9 months)

Now, my youngest son was a little bit of a surprise.  He’s our bonus baby.  He was born on a beautiful fall day right before the busy Holiday Season.  Justin was my tiny baby, only 5 lbs. 5 oz.  I remember the first time I saw him, I said, “He’s so tiny.”  At the time, I was working full-time at our gift store, beanie babies were hot and life was crazy.   Having Justin made me slow down and I’m so glad I did.  Justin used to ask me “Aren’t you glad you had another kid?”  and I’d say “Yes, I didn’t know I needed another baby, but, God did.” (and… he was right)

Happy Mother’s Day.  I hope your day is filled with good memories.

Paying it Forward

Pay it Forward Collage

Seeing all those pictures from the recent storms and tornado’s in the South, hearing all those stories,

it just breaks my heart all over again.  My prayers goes out to those families.

You see, it hits close to home, way to close to home. It’s just all a little too familiar.

It hasn’t been that long since my Hometown was (and still is) picking up pieces

from a devastating F-4 tornado.

It’s been almost 6 months and while there is progress, there is still so much to do.

I drove through a neighborhood the other day, and while looking at one of the destroyed homes,

I saw clothes still hanging in two of the upstairs closets.

Justin Pay it Forward

In November, after the tornado, the high school gave the kids an opportunity for a service day.

The kids went out and just helped with picking up debris.

Yesterday, the kids were given another opportunity to help.

I’m proud of my son and his willingness to help others.

My Mother’s Hand

A little Throw Back Thursday

Six years ago, for my Moms 70th birthday, the family made her a special scrapbook.

Everyone in the family made a special page, kids, grandkids, son-in laws, daughter in law, even dad made a page.  She loved that book.

Since Mothers Day is in a few days, I thought I share the page I made.

My Mother's Hand

My Mother’s Hand

Look closely at this picture.  At first all you see is my worried face.

Look  a little closer and you’ll see my Mother’s hand.

My Mother hand has always been there for me, ready to hold, sometimes scold,

to guide me and sometimes to gently be behind me, just to let me know she is there.

Nick and Grandma’s Mini Garden

A few weeks ago, Nick and I talked about making a special project.

I decided we should make a miniature garden for him to help me take care of.

Saturday, my little buddy came over to help me work on it.

Garden Tools

We had previously collected moss, sticks, bark and rocks for our project.

I added some mini plants (for fairy gardens), potting soil, a small park bench, tiny garden fence,

green spray bottle and a set of teeny tiny tools.

While cleaning out the garage a couple of weeks ago, I almost threw out this rusty broken

wagon.  I’m so glad I decided to keep it.   It was perfect for our mini garden.

Nick with Tools

All I needed was one excited 3 1/2 year old to help me.

Nick working in the garden

I added a piece of paper towel over the holes in the bottom of the wagon and we filled it

with potting soil.  I added the small fence, large flat rock and bench.  I let Nick finish the rest.

Nick loved digging in the dirt and adding the plants.

Garden Close Up

We put rocks around the little fence and even added a chicken to our garden.

Nick watering the tulips

Occasionally, Nick had to stop and water other things.  Like my tulips.

I don’t know who was more excited about the garden, him or me.

picnic lunch

Since, grandpa had brought the little white picnic table up from the barn.

Nick decided we needed to have a picnic lunch.  All in all, a day very well spent.

10 Things you may or may not know about me

Here are 10 things you may or may not know about me.  (in no particular order)

1.  I have lived in the Mid-West all my life.  I love it here, I love everything about it. (Well maybe not this last winter.  But even that’s becoming a distant memory.)  The Midwest’s home.  It’ll be a hard sell to get me to ever move away.

2.  My Favorite kind of Vacation is a “Beach Vacation”.  One of my favorite things to do is to sit on the beach under a beach umbrella, listen to music and read a book.  (Getting to the beach from the Midwest can be a challenge.)

3.  My favorite color is RED.  Anyone who knows me even a little bit has probably guessed this already.  Even though I don’t wear the color red often, I love the color red.  I think every room in the house needs a pop of red.  I even collect Red Toile dishes.

4.  I am a middle child.  (No, I don’t have a problem with that.)  I am one of 5 kids, 4 girls, raised in a very small ranch house with only one bathroom.  Funny thing, I don’t remember that being a big issue at the time.  (at least not for me.)  Bonus Trivia:  my husband is also a middle child, 4 boys, one girl.

5.  I met my husband in Hawaii while on Spring Break.  One of us may have been a flirt. Long story for another day.  (Bet that has you wondering.)

6.  I was always a shy and quiet kid.  I never would have guessed that I would love sharing and teaching my projects to groups.  It’s easy when you’re doing something you enjoy.

7.  I don’t embrace change well.  My family will agree on this one.  New things scare me and make me nervous.  (I had to be talked into getting a microwave in the 80’s.)

I’m not an artist.  I do, however, consider myself a creative person.  I did take art classes all through high school and even in college.  I enjoy art even though I can’t draw.  One thing I’ve learned about art is that there are all kinds of art and art is subjective.  One of the reasons I enjoy Paper Crafting so much is that I can be creative and make small little masterpieces that make me happy.  When I was a kid I loved doing all kinds of crafts.  At a very young age, I even had a thriving candle business for a while.  (or least I thought I did)  FYI:  I don’t like being called “crafty”.  I am “creative”.

9.  I love flowers.  I enjoy photographing them, growing them in containers and in gardens.  Flowers make me happy.  I love Springtime when I can make all those treks to the Garden Shop and pick all my flowers to plant.  My favorite flowers are daisies, roses and hydrangea.  Wouldn’t they look lovely in a vase together?

10.  My Family is Everything to me.  Last but definitely not least is my family.  One of the most important things in my life is my family.  I have three wonderful children, a loving husband, two adorable grandsons, great daughter and son in-laws, sweet father, fun siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews.  All who mean the world to me.  Family is Everything!  I love my crazy family.

Dad’s 83rd Birthday

We spent a rainy Sunday afternoon at my sis’s celebrating my Dad’s 83rd Birthday.

How lucky I am to have had such a loving and wonderful influence on my life.

Dad's Birthday 1

With the exception of a few raindrops on the lens and a photo bomb in the window,

I think this is a nice picture of Dad and his kids.

Happy Birthday, Dad.

Easter

Easter 2014 2

I love it when I get all my kids together in one place.  We hadn’t all been together since Christmas.

Of course, I had to grab the tri-pod and get a family picture.  We had a good laugh at all the takes,

one person in the group had too much Easter candy and kept running off.  (I won’t say who)

Serenity

I love the 12″ flower stencil from Clear Scraps and I was hooked the very first time I used it.

I have a very limited amount of mists and sprays but I some how ended up making a very fun mess.   “I was a misting fool.”

When I first got the 12″ flower stencil I knew I wanted to experiment with white backgrounds. (something I’m not too comfortable with) My “Serenity” layout is made using the flower stencil on white card stock and misted with October Afternoon’s Lemon Drop Sprinklers. I love how the stencil makes a soft, dramatic statement on the page. I wanted to keep the layout simple and added simple elements such as the daisy made with a punch from Marvy Uchida.

Misted 2

Here are some of the pages I misted.

Clear Scraps Misted Card Have a wonderful day 3-26-14

This card was made using gold Smooch Spritz from Clearsnap.  So simple, so quick!

Misted Canvas

I even misted a canvas.  A work in progress.

Love this Stencil!!!

Have a Creative Day,

Sue

Say Cheese

Serenity Layout Say Cheese

They were trying to get Serenity to smile when her grandpa decided to make a funny face.

When she copied him the result was pure fun and personality.

This layout was made for The Paper Forest Design Team.

It uses the “Modern Miss” collection from Bo Bunny.

Serenity Layout yellow background #2A little more serious layout from the same photo session.

This time I used a mix from the “Modern Miss” collection and “Calypso” background paper from Quick Quotes.  I purchased a second sheet of the floral paper and fussy cut around the flowers.  I added foam mounting squares under the flowers to add dimension.
