Hello Autumn Home Decor Sign

is an easy Fall Dollar Tree DIY.

With all the beautiful new Fall items on display everywhere you go,

I decided it was time to start working on my fall decorating.

I found this Harvest Pumpkin Hanging Wooden Circle Sign* at Dollar Tree*.  

It measures approximately 11″.

I knew it would be a great piece to hang on a wreath

or to use in my Fall decorating.

I used acrylic paint to paint the pumpkin and leaves.  

Just follow the etched lines of the leaves.

I blended my paint for a more realistic look.

Rub over the wood sign with walnut stain* or ink.

Use Mod Podge Satin Sealer* to give the sign a satin finish.

Lightly rub over the sign with an extra fine sanding block* to smooth the grains.

Cut the words “Hello Autumn” using StyleTechCraft Brown Glossy Craft Vinyl*

and a Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die Cutting Machine*.

Place vinyl transfer paper over the words.

Rub over the words using a vinyl scraper tool to help

the vinyl cling to the Vinyl Transfer Tape*.

Place the Vinyl Transfer Tape* onto the wood circle.

Gently rub over the design and remove the Vinyl Transfer Tape*.

The sign has two holes on the top for hanging.

I added a simple bow to the top between the two holes.

It would look great in the center of a Large Fall Wreath.

As Spring turns into Summer, I get inspired to change my decor to happy colors.

I like to open the windows and let in the fresh air.

And…I love to bring in fresh blooms whenever I can.

The Wood Mason Jar Cut-Out…

Sometimes when I see an item at the store, I have a vision of what I want to do.

Sometimes it works out, and other times it does not.

This particular time was the latter.

When I first saw the wood mason jar with flowers cut out,

I saw it stained with only the flowers painted.

So, I stained the wood.

It might have been the stain I used, but I wasn’t pleased with the result.

After letting it sit overnight, I decided a little acrylic paint might help.

So, I watered down my paints so they didn’t look too heavy and painted away.

While it isn’t what I originally had planned, it’s not too bad.

It’s bright and cheery.

Doesn’t vinyl make everything just a little better?

For extra personality, I added vinyl lettering using my favorite StyletechCraft* adhesive vinyl.

  • I used a Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die Cutting Machine* with the “Monsoon Font” from The Silhouette Store to create the words.
  • Cut the words using StyleTech Craft Glossy Vinyl.
  • After cutting, remove the excess vinyl using a Vinyl Weeding Tool*.
  • Lay the transfer paper over the words.
  • Rub over the transfer paper with a vinyl scraper tool and lift the design from the white paper backing.
  • Lay the transfer paper onto the sign and rub over the design.  Remove the transfer paper.

  • To make it a shelf sitter, I glued a small block, “borrowed” from the kid’s block basket, onto the back.
  • I painted the block with matching acrylic paint.

Now that it’s finished, I think the shelf sitter would also make a cute Mother’s Day or Teacher’s gift.

So many possibilities.

How to make a Porcelain Snowman Ornament using StyleTechCraft Vinyl.

I picked up this round porcelain ornament blank sometime early in the year at Dollar Tree.

I knew it would make a cute Christmas ornament for this year’s Christmas tree.

All it needed was a little StyleTechCraft Craft Vinyl* and a cute snowman design.

DIY Porcelain Snowman Ornament

  • Because I needed to work around the top holes of the ornament, I cut the outline from the snowman.   I carefully placed it on the ornament first to make sure it fit.

  • I used Transfer Tape* to add the snowman design to the ornament.
  • Place the Transfer Tape* over the vinyl.  Rub gently over the vinyl using a vinyl scraper tool.

  • Remove the transfer paper from the white paper backing and place it on the ornament.  The clear transfer tape makes it easy to line up your design.

All you need to do to finish up the ornament is to add ribbon for hanging and put it on your tree.

How to make a Welcome Autumn Pillow using craft vinyl to make the Stencil

How to make a Welcome Autumn Pillow using a Craft Vinyl Stencil:

  • For my pillow, I used off-white fabric that I purchased at a garage sale several years ago. I cut two panels 15″ x 15″.
  • I created the stencil pattern using the “Welcome Autumn” SVG file and my Silhouette. I sized the image to fit onto my fabric panels.
  • I cut the image using StyleTechCraft Craft Vinyl*. (I originally tried using removable vinyl on my fabric, but it wasn’t quite tacky enough and a little hard to apply.)
  • To create the stencil, remove the letters and the leaves from the vinyl, leaving a reverse image.  
  • Use a low-tack transfer paper to transfer the vinyl onto the fabric.

  • Make sure that the stencil is securely stuck to the fabric to eliminate paint seepage.
  • Place a piece of paper behind the fabric panel to protect your work surface.
  • Paint the leaves using a small paint brush and a variety of acrylic paint in Autumn colors.  
  • Paint the words “welcome Autumn using black acrylic paint.

  • After the paint has dried, carefully remove the stencil.  
  • I may have squealed a bit when I removed the stencil. It is perfectly imperfect, and I love how it turned out!
  • Iron over the fabric to set the design.

Sue’s Easy Craft Room Organizing Tip…

Purchase inexpensive photo storage boxes in the same color or pattern to bring calm to the clutter.  Perfect for Craft Room, Office or most any room of the house.

I’m generally a neat and tidy person and not a fan of clutter.  

That being said, I still have a lot of stuff I need to deal with.

For instance, last week, I spent a couple days going through and shredding old paperwork.  I’m ashamed to admit how many years of paper was shredded.  Once it was put away neatly and out of sight, I like to forget about it.  (or put off for another day.)  Last week was the day.  With the help of my husband, we collected three large garbage bags full of shredded paper.  

My home is always a work in progess.  

One of my favorite parts of organizing is labeling.

  • After my supplies were neatly organized, I cut out the words to go on the side of the lids because that’s the way the boxes will be going onto my shelves.
  •  Cut a piece of Vinyl Transfer Tape* to fit over the vinyl words.   

  • Gently rub over the vinyl transfer tape using the squeegee tool to make sure all the image has transferred.   Remove the transfer tape.

These are the little things that make me happy.  

I was able to fit forty small bottles of acrylic paint into one 7″ x 11 1/2″ photo box.

Neat, tidy, and easy to find what’s inside.

Here’s the way the shelves looked the last time I shared my craft room.

They are still neat but not as visually accessible.

Easy Peasy Upcycled Container

I love a good upcycled, recycled project.

Creating a useful item from something that would be thrown away or put in the recycling bin.

This project was made using an empty Nesquik container.

I have been drinking chocolate milk for as long as I can remember. My dad used to use the Nesquik containers in his garage to store nuts and bolts and lots of other small items. We found several vintage cans out in his garage when we were going through it.

I LOVE making things using craft vinyl and my Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die Cutting Machine*  There are so many things you can make and decorate.

Tip:  If you don’t have access to these products, you can still UPCYCLE/RECYCLE a container like the Nesquik Can using decorative paper, contact paper or stickers to personalize and embellish.  (Below are the directions and materials on how I upcycled my container.)

Directions:

  • Measures and cut two pieces of  vinyl to wrap around the container.  (I used one long piece and one shorter piece.)
  • Use the printed graphics on the side of the container to line up your edge.  Slowly wrap the vinyl around the container smoothing as you go to reduce the air bubbles.

  • Use the squeegee tool to smooth the vinyl.  If you can’t get rid of the air bubble with the squeegee tool you can use a small pin to poke a hole in the vinyl to release the air.

You can find the Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy SVG file at the Silhouette Design Store.

  • Use the vinyl pick to remove the letters from the vinyl lemon, leave the inside pieces of the letters.

  • Cut a piece of Vinyl Transfer Tape* to fit over the vinyl image.  Gently rub over the transfer paper using the squeegee tool.
  • Remove the vinyl from the white liner, center the image on the front of the can.
  • Gently rub over the Vinyl Transfer Tape* to make sure all the image has transferred.   Remove the transfer tape.
  • Repeat the process with the stem and leaf.

A fun little upcycled project, great for many different uses.  (not just in the garage)

Place several cans side by side for a cute and creative way to store supplies.

Shared Kindness…

Blessings are the Harvest of Kindness

When I create, I create projects for a variety of reasons. 

Sometimes the project helps me tell a story. 

This particular project reminded me of a sweet exchange that happened between

my mom and a stranger several years ago. 

Just a reminder… World Kindness Day is November 13th. 

Please take a moment to spread a little kindness.

Shared kindness…

After eating lunch with my parents and sister at the local Steak and Shake,

Dad got up to pay the bill at the counter.  I stayed back to help Mom. 

When Mom got up, she noticed a lady sitting at a nearby table and said, “I know her”. 

Mom was in later stages of dementia, so I questioned her, “I don’t think we do Mom” I said. 

As I was trying to get her to leave, she said:  “I want to talk to her, I know her.” 

The lady must have heard us and looked up.  I quietly asked, “Does she know you?” 

Mom had worked at a school for many years, and she knew a lot of people that I didn’t.

The lady shook her head no.

Then without missing a beat, the lady got up, put my mom’s hand in hers and said:

“So, you think you know me?” and introduced herself.

After Mom struggled to get her name out, the woman smiled and said, “so nice to meet you”.

And with that, my mom was happy and left the restaurant with a smile on her face.

It only took a minute for this sweet woman to make a difference.

Mom’s been gone for a while now, but It’s something I’ve never forgotten.

To create the Wood Plaque…

Directions:

  • Lightly sand the wooden rectangle with the sanding block to prepare the surface for paint.
  • Paint four horizontal autumn hued stripes on the wood.
  • With a flat dry brush blend the colors together to create a “Fall Rainbow”.
  • Lightly sand over the painted surface to smooth the grain of the wood.

  • Using an electronic die cutting machine, I cut the words.
  • Using a weeding tool carefully remove the negative spaces in and around the letters.
  • Place a piece of Vinyl Transfer Tape* over the letters.  Rub over the letters using a vinyl scraper tool to help the vinyl cling
  • Apply words onto a small wood rectangle.
