Creative Christmas Crafting Organization Tips…

It’s that time of year when thoughts are leaning towards the Holidays.

As a crafter, it’s my favorite time of year to do craft projects.

But, as a blogger, there’s a lot of crafting, creating, and sharing to do.

For fun, I thought I’d show how I organize my Craft Supplies for the

Ultimate Holiday Crafting Season.

Of course, my go-to storage comes from Deflecto.

To prepare for the busy season ahead, I like to transition my space with

all my Christmas Crafting Supplies conveniently close.

I like to mix a little old with the new to make it interesting.

I never know what will inspire the next project.

Here a few of the products I used for my Holiday Crafting Organization.

I use the Deflecto Interlocking Tilt Bins* to keep my jingle bells, small

wood embellishments, paints, bottle brush trees, all neatly organized and

easily accessible.

I use a lot of ribbon during the Holidays.

I use the Deflecto Ribbon Dispenser* that fits into the large section of the

ribbon rolls. As you can see, it holds several.

The small and medium containers hold my glue guns and adhesives.

The Stackable Caddy* is great for grab and go crafting.

Not only is it efficient, but it’s really pretty to look at.

Stamp Sets that I will be working on soon. It’s also a great place to stash

cut cardstock ready to be folded into cards.

scissors, pens, and pencils. It looks great and keeps everything neat and

tidy. (and…it fits nicely into the stackable caddy)

When working on cards it’s great to have my markers organized and close

at hand. I love that I can unfold the Expandable Marker Accordion*

into several different configurations.

It’s a perfect companion to have on my desk.

I love using wood slices in projects.

If you’re lucky, and you have lots of trees, chances are you may have a log or two that you

could cut off a slice. If not, with the popularity of wood slices* you can easily find them online,

or in the craft department of your favorite store.

Buffalo Plaid Wood Slice Pumpkin

  • To get the color I wanted for the base of my pumpkin. I mixed Orange Twist and Jack-O-Lantern acrylic paint.
  • Paint just to the inside edge of the pumpkin slice. Leave the outer bark showing.

How to make a Buffalo Plaid Wood Slice Pumpkin

  • Add strips of painter’s tape onto the pumpkin to make stripes.  Rub your finger over the tape to make sure that the tape is securely on the pumpkin and has no gaps.
  • Paint inside the stripes with a thin coat of white birch acrylic paint.  Be careful not to apply the paint too thick.   Only one thin coat of paint is needed.
  • Remove painter’s tape.
  • Allow paint to fully dry before continuing to the next step.

  • Rotate the frame 180° and apply the tape in the opposite direction. Make sure the tape is securely down.
  • Paint additional stripes with a light coat of dolphin (light gray) acrylic paint.

  • Remove the painter’s tape. Allow the paint to dry.
  • Lightly sand the wood slice. Sanding brings out the wood-grain and helps to hide any little imperfections.
  • Wipe with a clean cloth.

  • Cut a small 2″ piece from a tree branch to use for the stem.
  • I also used a “home” wood word picked up at the craft store for my pumpkin.
  • Hot glue the stem onto the top of the pumpkin.  Hot glue the word “Home” on the front of the pumpkin.

How to make a Buffalo Plaid Wood Slice Pumpkin

  • To give my Pumpkin a little extra support while sitting on my mantel, I hot glued a small wood piece (cut from an old scrabble tray) to the back of the pumpkin.  Because the wood slice is not perfectly round, you may have to offset it a bit.
  • Tie raffia around the stem and hot glue a small button bow with faux fall berries onto the pumpkin.  You can find instructions on how to make a button bow here.

Easy DIY Football Themed Party Ideas

Fall Football and Fun…

Fall is right around the corner, and with that comes Football Season.

Whether you’re watching the NFL, College or High School, a few simple football snacks

are always welcomed by the fans.

To keep the decorating easy, I used a few sheets of Football themed scrapbook paper.

I used one of the 3″ x 4″ sections and attached it to the front of a small caddy container

(from the Deflecto Stackable Caddy Organizer*) with repositionable tape to make a

silverware holder.

I used the Deflecto 3 Tier Dessert Stand* to hold my snacks.

The stand is the perfect tailgating companion.

It is easy to put together and folds flat for compact storing and transporting.

Use football-themed washi tape or strips of cut paper and adhere it around the edges

of the tiers for added fun.  (Make sure to use repositionable adhesive. )

Create a banner to hang on the wall using colored cardstock or construction paper in your

favorite team colors.  I created the letters using white craft vinyl from StyleTechCraft and cut

them out using my  Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die Cutting Machine*.

You could also use letter stickers to spell out your words.

I picked up clear cups, napkins, condiment cups and silverware at Dollar Tree.

Entertaining doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Having everything in clear cups makes for easy grab and go snacking.

I also found this cute little Football Game at Dollar Tree. 

It makes a great prop and sign holder.

Popcorn, Muddy Buddy, Pretzels, Mini Corn Dogs and Beer.  Oh My!

How to make a Beach Inspired Windchime

A Beach Inspired Windchime for those us that LOVE the beach.

If you’re one of the lucky ones that live on the ocean or have a Beach House.

Here is a simple project to make that you can hang on the back porch.

Or if you don’t live on the beach or have a beach house.

The Windchime is a fun reminder of trips to the ocean,

and a great way to use some of those shells you collected.

Gather Your Supplies…

The Caddy Storage Tray* is so handy to use. It’s perfect for sorting the various sizes of wood beads. And it fits into the large container of the Deflecto Stackable Caddy Organizer*.  I used the Deflecto Interlocking Marker Organizer* in the caddy to hold my paintbrushes.  I put all my supplies in the caddy and took it onto the deck, where I worked on the wind chime under my umbrella on a beautiful Summer day.  (and wished I was on the beach)

Faux Driftwood…

Because I didn’t have an actual driftwood stick from the beach.  I used a stick found in the yard and broke it down to size.

  • Scrape the bark off the stick.  (I used an old table knife.)
  • Paint the stick with white acrylic paint and a couple of stripes of pale blue and aqua.
  • Give the stick a light sanding with fine-grit sandpaper to rough it up and make it look more natural.

  • Cut five pieces of twine approximately 24″ long.
  • Tie a knot on one end of the twine.
  • Wrap a small piece of blue removable painters tape on the other end of the twine to keep the twine from fraying.
  • String Wood Beads onto the twine.

  • Tie beaded twine to the painted stick.
  • On the center of the stick, I glued a medium-sized Starfish purchased at a Beach Gift Shop.
  • Add a couple of beads to a piece of twine. Tie twine to each end of the stick to use as a hanger.
  • Stick the loose ends of the twine through the beads to hide.

Patriotic Themed Summer Party

Celebrate the Red, White, and Blue!

No matter if your party is big or small.

It’s easy to throw together a Red, White, and Blue Patriotic Themed Summer Party.

Gather up some hotdogs, burgers, and brats for the perfect Summer BBQ Get-Together.

Here are a few Ideas to make the Summer Holidays fun and special.

Bold Stripes and Bright Stars

Every party needs a few yummy desserts.

The 3 Tier Dessert Stand* from Deflecto is perfect for displaying cupcakes and other goodies.

It is easy to put together and folds flat for compact storing.

All three tiers on the stand have holes for holding cake pops.

They were the perfect size for inserting small flags and the handmade banner for the top.

How to make the Banner…

  • Cut two bamboo skewers 6″ each.  Wrap the ends with decorative washi tape.  The washi tape helps keep the skewers securely in place when inserting in the stand.
  • Die-cut or hand-cut 5 banners out of decorative scrapbook paper.
  • Tie a piece of blue and white twine on each end of the bamboo skewers.
  • Fold banners and adhere to the twine.
  • Apply letter stickers on the front of the banners.
  • I used red glitter vinyl and my silhouette die-cutting machine to create the words USA to apply to my banners.
  • Stick on each side of the top tier in the holes made to hold cake pops.

Little details make everything more festive.

Don’t forget to make a few star picks to stick into the cupcakes.

This is a fun project that the kids can help you make.

  • Create the picks by punching or die-cutting several blue and red stars.
  • Add adhesive to the back of the star and place a toothpick in the center.
  • Adhere a second star on the back.
  • For quick and easy work, I used the Xyron Create-A-Sticker* to add adhesive to the stars.
  • Decorative the stars with additional small foil stars.

Add a touch of Vintage Americana with blue Ball mason jars. 

They are great for storing straws, and they also make great drinking glasses.

And when the sun starts going down, don’t forget the sparklers and glow in the dark novelties.

Shaving Cream Art

Create Unique One of a Kind Art with Shaving Cream.

Shaving Cream Art is a fun project that the whole family can participate in.

How to Create Shaving Cream Art

Materials Needed:

Shaving Cream Art can get a little messy so a little prep work is necessary.

  • For easy clean up…Place a piece of wax paper* over a large baking sheet.
  • Add shaving cream onto wax paper.
  • Add several drops of ink onto the shaving cream.

  • Use a craft stick* to swirl the ink into the shaving cream.
  • Do not over stir or the shaving cream will become muddy.

  • Place card-stock directly onto the shaving cream and lightly Smoosh.

  • Carefully lift the card-stock from the shaving cream.

  • Use the scraper tool* to scrape the excess shaving cream from the card-stock.

  • Without re-stirring the shaving cream, you can repeat the process several more times.
  • The first one will be the most vibrant and will get subtly lighter each time.

Each one will be different and will lighten as they dry.

You can use this process to create even larger pieces of art. 

Shaving Cream Art also makes a great background for card-makers.

Tips and Benefits of working at Home

Now that more and more people are working from home, I wanted to share a few tips for

getting organized, creating a neat desktop and benefits of working at home.

One of the first steps in creating a working environment is your workspace.

It doesn’t have to be fancy or stylish.

My desk/work surface is an old Sunday School table that I purchased at a church rummage sale.

Start with a clean desktop.  It’s the one thing I like to do to help control the chaos in life.

Find useful items to keep you organized.

I use a variety of new and vintage items to organize my craft/office space.

On my desk, I like to keep it as clutter-free as I can.

I found the Deflecto 12″ x 12″ Stackable Storage Trays* is a great way to corral my paper

clutter.  I use the first tier to hold the items I reference most often.

As a paper crafter, I use the second tier  to hold my scrapbook paper and future projects.

Make it Personal.

It doesn’t matter if your space is temporary or permanent,

make sure it reflects your personal style.

Choose Good Lighting.

To help your eyes from getting tired, choose a light fixture to brighten up your space.

I chose an inexpensive desk lamp in my favorite color of red.

If you have room, place a favorite family photo on your desk.

It’ll remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing in the first place.

One of my favorite benefits of working from home is Cute Co-Workers.  

Don’t let the cuteness of this scruffy puppy throw you.

He’ll steal your supplies the moment you turn your back.  (sometimes right in front of your face)

Below is a short list of benefits I discovered while working at home.  (in no particular order)

10 Benefits of Working from Home

  1. A Short Commute:  My son has to be at work at 8:00 in the morning.  He said he can get up by 7:55 and still be there on time.
  2. No Traffic or Crowds
  3. Every day is Casual Friday:  (really, really casual)  Shoes optional.
  4. You don’t have to make small talk with your co-workers.  (that is unless your co-workers are really small and also home)
  5. Less annoying co-workers.
  6. No boss breathing down your neck.
  7. Save Money on Gas, Coffee, and Lunches
  8. You can eat when you want.  (Heck, you can drink wine while you work.)
  9. Throw in a load of laundry during breaks
  10. More time with your Family

(There are definite disadvantages of working from home, but, for this post, I’m choosing not to focus on those.)

This is one corner of my Office/Craft Room/Studio.

It’s where all the real work happens.

I’ve been working on this space since last Spring when I moved into my son’s old bedroom.

This room is a much larger space than I had previously.

With a fresh coat of paint, a ship-lap accent wall, it’s turning into my favorite room of the house.

With additional purging, picture hanging and organizing, it’ll be ready for a full studio tour

in no time.

Creating a Mini Greenhouse for Starting Seeds

I was searching online for Mini Greenhouses when I came across an image of a container

for starting seeds that reminded me of the containers found in the

Deflecto Stackable Caddy Organizer*.

That image sparked an idea for creating a moveable mini greenhouse.

Because everything’s a little better when you add vinyl…

I decided to personalize the containers.

I used a Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die Cutting Machine* to create and cut the flower

names out of Ruby and Apple Green Polished Metal adhesive vinyl from StyleTechCraft.

Using the weeding tool, carefully remove the negative spaces in and around the letters.

I also cut and weeded 4 graduating sizes of ruffled flowers using Yellow and Orange Polished

Metal Adhesive Vinyl and leaves made from Apple Green Polished Metal Vinyl.

Stager and layer the vinyl flowers to create a marigold-looking flower.

To apply the vinyl:

  • Cut a piece of transfer tape a little larger than the words.
  • Lay transfer tape over the words and give a gentle rub using a scraper tool.

  • Use the transfer tape* to apply the words onto the container.
  • Rub over the transfer tape with the scraper tool to help the letters stick.
  • Remove the transfer tape*.

The Deflecto Stackable Caddy Organizer* comes with three clear containers; small, medium,

and large.  I used the two larger containers to plant my seeds.

I took the lid off the smallest container and used it to hold my garden tools and seed packets.

  • Add a layer of potting soil to the bottom of the clear containers and sprinkle the top with seeds.
  • Add a thin layer of soil on top of the seeds and water.

The containers create a humidity dome which is great for keeping seeds moist and protected.

The seeds will start to sprout in a 5-10 days.

When the seedlings mature, I will transfer them into pots and then into the ground.

My Mini Greenhouse Seed Starter is easy to move around so I can take advantage of the best

sunshine.  A great project to do as a family.

  • Use the ink applicator to apply purple ink to one edge of the ribbon.

  • glue small vintage button to the center of the flower.
  • to create leaves:  fold a small strip of green ribbon and glue to the back of the flower.

  • Glue flowers onto wreath.
  • Optional:  Glue small sprigs of flowers on each end of the ribbon flowers.

Organizing the Craft Cabinet

Organizing the Craft Cabinet with Deflecto Storage

I have been slowly working on creating my perfect workspace since last Spring

when I moved my craft room into my son’s old bedroom.

I’ve been taking my time, I want to get it right.

It’s coming along beautifully.  (I hope to share it soon.)

As crafter’s go, I’m a fairly neat and tidy person.

I’m also a fan of closed-door storage.

With closed-door storage, cabinets can easily get ignored and out of control.

I had one of those ignored craft cabinets.

After clearing out the cabinet, I organized items into clear storage containers from Deflecto.

Because I’m such a nice person, I occasionally allow others to use my craft supplies.

Labeling the bins not only look good, but it’s helpful for those looking for supplies.

I used a  Silhouette Cameo Electronic Die Cutting Machine* to create and cut the words out of

StyleTechCraft black adhesive vinyl*.

I used transfer paper to apply the words onto the clear bins.

As a self proclaimed organizing nut, I find labeled bins extremely satisfying.

Clear bins make everything easier to find.

The bins are also easy to take with you when you need to work.

They keep your work space clutter-free and your supplies close at hand.
